Functionally it's on par with Steam plus EA has way better customer support than Valve in my experience. I think Origin is actually a good service compared to other game distribution platforms. It is bad enough I had to sell my soul to Valve. I am not going to download and use their service.
This is not free, you have to sell your soul to EA. I've read that it's not compatible with online multiplayer (other than virtual networks like hamachi) so don't delete the original.
